WELCOME TO THE CATHOLIC CHURCH
IN EAST ST. JAMES PARISH
Mission Statement:
In the Cluster of East St. James Parish, we wholeheartedly embrace our mission to "Focus on Faith, Sacraments, Gospel, and Community." With compassion, we strive to be the hands and feet of Christ, reaching out to those in need and sharing His comforting message. Our welcoming space is a refuge for everyone, offering solace and support as we come together to nurture a vibrant and loving community centered on God’s Church.
What makes us unique:
Our cluster of churches in East St. James Parish is a history and culture treasure trove, showcasing a captivating blend of German, French, Spanish, and African influences. This rich tapestry of backgrounds enhances our vibrant identity, which is deeply rooted in our proud agricultural heritage, including the lush sugarcane fields and the unique Perique tobacco specific to our area. Our close-knit community thrives along the majestic Mississippi River, where the aroma of delightful Southern cooking—infused with African and Acadian traditions—fills the air.
One of the highlights of our traditions is the enchanting Christmas Eve bonfires illuminating the levee. Legend has it that these bonfires guide Papa Noël's journey throughout the River Parishes. As Catholics, we know that in years past, they served to light the way to the beautiful and historic St. Michael Church in Convent, St. Joseph Church in Paulina, and Most Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Gramercy for Christmas Eve midnight Mass. These traditions bring warmth and joy to our gatherings and strengthen our community bonds.
At the heart of our cluster are three historic parishes that work hand in hand, exemplifying teamwork that fosters dynamic ministries and uplifting activities, creating a strong and caring church community. Our roots stretch back to the mid-18th century, with the first baptism and marriage recorded in 1770, followed by the arrival of the Marist priest who settled here and served at Jefferson College, now known as Manresa Retreat House. The first Marist foundation in America was established here in Convent, developing a community of deep Marian devotion that exists to this day. Our roots are deep and as unwavering as our Catholic faith.
Vision Statement:
Our vision is clear: "Walk by faith and not by sight," trusting that God will provide and guide us. We aim to build a strong, loving place for everyone to dwell.
